Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2009, $400,000)

The Institute for Intergovernmental Research (IIR) will provide support services to the National Information Exchange Model (NIEM) project. NIEM is an interagency initiative to provide the foundation and building blocks for nationwide interoperable information sharing and data exchange. Initiated in early 2005 as a joint venture between the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Department of Justice, with outreach to other agencies, NIEM has become a nationally recognized federal, state, local, and tribal interagency initiative, which provides a framework for seamless information exchange. NIEM enables information sharing, focusing on information exchanged among organizations as part of their current or intended business practices. The NIEM exchange development methodology results in a common semantic understanding among participating organizations, and data is formatted in a semantically consistent manner. Through this project, IIR will support the NIEM 2009 National Training Event, provide meeting and logistical support to the NIEM Program Management Office, and maintain the NIEM project website.
