Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2009, $26,493)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local governments, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).

Cape May County, the city of Wildwood, and Middle Township will apply Fiscal Year 2009 JAG funding towards separate initiatives aimed at enhancing community policing efforts. Specifically, the city of Wildwood will purchase pocket citation devices for traffic enforcement. Software for the e-ticket devices will also be purchased. Middle Township, through its police department, will also use its share to purchase citation devices and associated software. The new devices will work in tandem with the department's mobile data terminals housed in its patrol vehicles. Installation costs of the e-ticket devices will be supported as well. For administrative purposes, Middle Township will serve as the fiscal agent for this award. Though the county will not receive a portion of funds, it remains a partner in this disparate group.
