Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2009, $10,979)
The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local governments, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).
The city of Staunton will use its Fiscal Year 2009 JAG award towards community initiatives to prevent gang activities. This grant will also provide support to the police department through the purchase of software to analyze interagency issues, collect personnel, and departmental information and data. Specifically, this grant will fund the formation and support of a comprehensive gang model sub-committee and its initiatives. Such costs may include hiring a statistical evaluator, data collection, work-group meetings, and sub-committee bi-monthly meetings. In addition, the funds will be used to support the SunGard OSSI pistol program for the police department. The pistol program is an internal affairs/professional standards module that will allow the police department administrators to collect information on internal affairs, citizens, complaints, use of force events, and fleet vehicle accidents. This software will allow the police department to better analyze issues within the agency and efficiently manage sensitive personnel and departmental information.
