The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local governments, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).

The cities of Gulfport and Biloxi, and Harrison County have been certified disparate and shall share the aggregate of funds ($147,832) allocated to them through the Fiscal Year 2009 Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program to augment law enforcement resources necessary to respond to calls for service within the involved jurisdictions. The city of Gulfport, serving as fiscal agent, will use their share of the funds to increase police patrols on an overtime basis. The city of Biloxi will use grant funds to replace a police K-9 that is being retired due to medical reasons, to purchase in car computers to be used as mobile data terminals, and to purchase a fiber optic bore scope to be used for vehicle search operations. Harrison County will use their funds to deter crime and enhance public safety through the purchase of new desktop and laptop computers for their criminal investigations, warrants/extraditions, and Administration Divisions.
