Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2009, $200,000)

The Council of State Governments/American Probation and Parole Association (CSG/APPA) will continue its Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) initiative by promoting district level outreach to probation and parole agencies to facilitate their involvement in PSN gun and gang violence reduction efforts. This project will encourage and enhance probation and parole agencies' involvement in a multi-agency strategy to reduce gang and gun violence as part of PSN, with an emphasis on addressing issues faced by rural probation and parole officers. APPA will accomplish this through: the delivery of telephone, internet, and onsite training and technical assistance; the development of probation- and parole-related fact sheets and bulletins to improve supervision of gun violence and gang-involved offenders in the community; the development of training specific for probation and parole officers serving rural areas, and the delivery and development of supplemental PSN anti-gang training materials as required.
