The purposes of the FY 2009 Tribal Courts Assistance Program (TCAP) are to develop new tribal courts, improve the operations of existing tribal courts, and provide training and technical assistance for tribal court staff. The TCAP program goals are to provide planning grants that will focus on establishing tribal courts by supporting the development of comprehensive strategy and implementation plans, provide grants for existing tribal court systems to enhance tribal court services, and provide planning grants for tribal justice system strategies.
The Native Village of Barrow will fund the salary of a court clerk, upgrade technology, and train judges and staff at the Native Village of Barrow's (NVB) Tribal Court. Tribal court clerks have essential roles in the day-to-day operation and management of tribal courts. They help to ensure consistency in the activities of the tribal court. The court clerk will be responsible for automating tribal court case management. The NVB Tribal Court will develop the court's capability to increase integration of tribal justice information systems by purchasing a software suite for courts. They will enhance, expand, and upgrade the court's ability to serve the public by training judges and court staff.
