Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2009, $148,800)

The purposes of the FY 2009 Tribal Courts Assistance Program (TCAP) are to develop new tribal courts, improve the operations of existing tribal courts, and provide training and technical assistance for tribal court staff. The TCAP program goals are to provide planning grants that will focus on establishing tribal courts by supporting the development of comprehensive strategy and implementation plans, provide grants for existing tribal court systems to enhance tribal court services, and provide planning grants for tribal justice system strategies.

The Tonto Apache Tribe will enhance the operation of the Tonto Apache Tribal Court by purchasing and implementing a court records management software system. They will transfer all cases into the new court management system. The Tonto Apache Tribe will also send appropriate personnel to trainings to obtain instructions about the case management system operation. The Tonto Apache Tribe goals will implement court enhancements, create a comprehensive Wellness Court planning process that includes all relevant service providers, ensure that all aspects of the Wellness Court are in place and functioning within the court system, review and update all tribal law and order codes, and submit codes for authorization by the tribal governing body. The Tonto Apache Tribe will contract with consultants who will participate in updating and implementing tribal law and order codes.
