Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2009, $150,000)

The purposes of the FY 2009 Tribal Courts Assistance Program (TCAP) are to develop new tribal courts, improve the operations of existing tribal courts, and provide training and technical assistance for tribal court staff. The TCAP program goals are to provide planning grants that will focus on establishing tribal courts by supporting the development of comprehensive strategy and implementation plans, provide grants for existing tribal court systems to enhance tribal court services, and provide planning grants for tribal justice system strategies.

The Native Village of Kotlik will support the Kotlik Inter-Tribal Court. They will improve the management of civil, children,
custody, domestic violence, and banishment cases as well as adoptions to help the court and the people involved in each case. They will also provide tribal court training to judges and staff. The Kotlik Inter-Tribal Court will continue to draft and adopt codes to provide them with better tools to manage tribal lands. Specifically, they will develop and strengthen codes and ordinances for domestic cases, juvenile offenses, alcohol and substance abuse cases and child welfare codes. The purpose of the Tribal Court is to provide justice, mediate disputes, and find solutions to problems in the Kotlik Village.
