The purposes of the FY 2009 Tribal Courts Assistance Program (TCAP) are to develop new tribal courts, improve the operations of existing tribal courts, and provide training and technical assistance for tribal court staff. The TCAP program goals are to provide planning grants that will focus on establishing tribal courts by supporting the development of comprehensive strategy and implementation plans, provide grants for existing tribal court systems to enhance tribal court services, and provide planning grants for tribal justice system strategies.

The Port Gamble S'Klallam Tribe will enhance their Tribal Court efficiency and ensure the continuity of traditions and culture while maintaining its sovereignty and self-determination. Presently handling an average of 200 criminal, civil, and juvenile cases per year, the Tribal Court will use the funds to hire a Probation Officer who will develop and manage their new Adult Compliance Program. The Tribal Court will undertake this effort in collaboration with its Advisory Board who is comprised of representatives from the elected tribal council, court, law enforcement and corrections, treatment services, and the at-large community. The Tribal Court will improve the administration of justice on the Little Boston Reservation.
