Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2009, $150,000)

The purposes of the FY 2009 Tribal Courts Assistance Program (TCAP) are to develop new tribal courts, improve the operations of existing tribal courts, and provide training and technical assistance for tribal court staff. The TCAP program goals are to provide planning grants that will focus on establishing tribal courts by supporting the development of comprehensive strategy and implementation plans, provide grants for existing tribal court systems to enhance tribal court services, and provide planning grants for tribal justice system strategies.

The Reno Sparks Indian Colony will implement a Tribal Court Enhancement Project. The goals are to: provide comprehensive case management and continuing education training; update and revise the tribal codes; and employ additional tribal court staff. The Reno Sparks Tribal Court will fund a part-time Deputy Clerk, staff to draft tribal codes and publish approved tribal code, purchase new computers and printers, purchase new court case management software, support case management software and other training for court staff. They will research, identify, and procure appropriate hardware and software to provide enhanced integration of a tribal justice case management system; thereby, improving information sharing abilities and reducing the tribal court's case backlog. The Reno Sparks Indian Colony will improve tribal justice services to the community.
