Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2009, $127,972)

The purposes of the FY 2009 Tribal Courts Assistance Program (TCAP) are to develop new tribal courts, improve the operations of existing tribal courts, and provide training and technical assistance for tribal court staff. The TCAP program goals are to provide planning grants that will focus on establishing tribal courts by supporting the development of comprehensive strategy and implementation plans, provide grants for existing tribal court systems to enhance tribal court services, and provide planning grants for tribal justice system strategies.

The Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas will implement their Tribal Court Enhancement Project. The goals are to provide comprehensive case management, create a probation services department that will coordinate with law enforcement and treatment providers to ensure the enforcement of post sentencing related court orders by hiring two probation officers; and expand the existing court dockets or the establishment of new dockets including dockets for civil and juvenile cases. The court will hire two probation officers, purchase case management software, and fund training opportunities for program staff. The Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas will research, identify, and procure appropriate hardware and software to enhance integration of a tribal justice case management system, thereby improving information sharing abilities with law enforcement and treatment providers, and by reducing the tribal courts' case backlog.
