Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2009, $500,000)
The Planning Correctional Facilities on Tribal Lands Competitive Grant Program assists tribes in developing strategies to cost effectively plan facilities associated with the incarceration and rehabilitation of juvenile and adult offenders subject to tribal jurisdiction. Careful planning is critical to ensure that correctional facilities, when completed, are appropriately designed for the intended population, supportive of cultural and traditional values, safe and secure when completed, and in compliance with Bureau of Indian Affairs' standards regarding correction operations, programs, and design.
The Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians will use the FY 2009 Construction of Correctional Facilities on Tribal Lands - Renovation award to construct a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary and improved public safety and justice facility to house the Tribal Police, including holding cells, Tribal Courts, Clerk of Courts, Prosecutor, Child Support Department, the Wisconsin Department of Corrections Probation and Parole Office, and provide for future growth in program areas that provide alternatives to incarceration and emergency management services. Grant funds will be combined with other grant funds and expended for contracts for construction of the facility.
