Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2009, $3,913,841)

The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation will expand their current national support programs and services to assist survivors of fallen firefighters. They will: add new members to the Fire Service Survivors Network and expand its services, help survivors locate grief support in their local communities, sponsor Family Day activities in conjunction with the annual National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend, provide information on survivor death and disability benefits, continue the Local Assistance State Teams (LAST) to assist fire service and EMS survivors in accessing federal, state, and local benefits, provide publications and grief resource materials for survivors, and offer specialized web site services and resources for survivors. The project will also conduct an annual conference for fire service survivors, develop an online 'Taking Care of Our Own' training program with related resources, expand support and response networks to assist fire service managers, and expand specialized web site resources and publications for fire departments. The Foundation will provide in-depth information on survivor benefits and exemplary programs, promote initiatives to reduce line-of-duty deaths, promote a speakers bureau of survivors to feature their success stories made possible by programs supported by the BJA grant. In addition, training programs will be enhanced with expanded support and response networks made available to assist fire service managers.
