The Recovery Act - Renovation of Correctional Facilities on Tribal Lands Discretionary Grant Program assists tribes in developing strategies to cost effectively construct or renovate existing facilities associated with the incarceration and rehabilitation of juvenile and adult offenders subject to tribal jurisdiction. Careful planning is critical to ensure that new and renovated correctional facilities are appropriately designed for the intended population, supportive of cultural and traditional values, safe and secure when completed, and are in compliance with appropriate standards regarding correctional operations, programs, and design.

The Yankton Sioux Tribe of South Dakota will receive $5,800,000 in award funds from the FY 2009 Recovery Act: Correctional Facilities on Tribal Lands Program Category III. The Yankton Sioux Tribe will use award funds to complete an adult and juvenile correctional facility that is currently 60% completed. The Yankton Sioux Correctional Facility will house tribal members and members of other tribes who reside on the reservation. This facility will house both adults and juveniles and is supportive of cultural and traditional values and the provision of a safe and secure environment for inmates.
