Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2010, $195,360)

The purpose of the Drug Court Discretionary Grant Program (42 U.S.C. 3797u et seq.) is to provide financial and technical assistance to states, state courts, local courts, units of local government, and Indian tribal governments to develop and implement drug treatment courts that effectively integrate substance abuse treatment, mandatory drug testing, sanctions and incentives, and transitional services in a judicially supervised court setting with jurisdiction over nonviolent, substance-abusing offenders. The FY 2010 Adult Drug Court Discretionary Grant Program will provide grant funds to jurisdictions to implement or enhance a local drug court or to improve, enhance, expand, or financial support drug court services statewide.

The Maine Judicial Branch Administrative Office of the Court will use the grant funds to expand the capacity of the Washington County Adult Drug Treatment Court (WCADTC) to serve a greater number of participants in need of a broad array of treatment and recovery support services. The goals of the program are to expand the program's intended target population; provide evidence-based training for WCADTC drug court practitioners; expand and enhance core court services; and improve the quality and intensity of existing services through evidence-based interventions. As a result of the proposed enhancements, the WCADTC will have a greater ability to protect community safety and support long-term recovery from substance abuse, co-occurring mental illness, and trauma among the participants it serves.
