Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2010, $224,000)

The purpose of the Drug Court Discretionary Grant Program (42 U.S.C. 3797u et seq.) is to provide financial and technical assistance to states, state courts, local courts, units of local government, and Indian tribal governments to develop and implement drug treatment courts that effectively integrate substance abuse treatment, mandatory drug testing, sanctions and incentives, and transitional services in a judicially supervised court setting with jurisdiction over nonviolent, substance-abusing offenders. The FY 2010 Adult Drug Court Discretionary Grant Program will provide grant funds to jurisdictions to implement or enhance a local drug court or to improve, enhance, expand, or financial support drug court services statewide.

Sevier County will use the grant funds to implement a multi-jurisdictional adult drug court. The drug court will provide a non-adversarial judicially supervised treatment and case management program to non-violent felony drug and alcohol offenders that have a desire to become drug free, productive, and responsible citizens and family members. The goal is to provide therapeutic interventions and assist offenders in bringing about behavioral change that will improve their quality of life and return them to their family and community while enhancing public safety and reducing crime. This will be accomplished by collaborating with local criminal justice agencies as well as local community agencies to provide support services relating to employment, educational and vocational placement, family counseling, housing placement, mental health, and substance abuse.
