The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).
Carson City will use JAG funds to support community policing and crime prevention activities. Specifically, the grant funds will provide prevention education classes for students in grades k-12, parents, and agency personnel; host four activities or awareness campaigns throughout the year including Cops and Kids Spaghetti Dinner, Cops and Kids Sheriff's Open House (safety fair), National Night Out, Halloween Safety, Red Ribbon Campaign and Child Identification Campaigns; and, host one state training conference for law enforcement/DARE officers to provide training for more than 20 officers. The project goals are to continue community policing activities with law enforcement related prevention education and intervention services for all citizens, and to maintain community crime and substance abuse prevention and awareness programs, and campaigns for parents, school faculty, students, and citizens.
