Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2010, $171,509)
The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).
The disparate jurisdictions consisting of Scott County and the city of Davenport will utilize the FY 2010 JAG award in the amount of $171,509 towards law enforcement salaries. In a joint effort, grant funds will be use to support salary and benefits for four officers who are on the Quad Cities Metropolitan Enforcement Group Drug Task Force (QCMEG). Two of the officers are from the Scott County Sheriff's Office and one each are from Davenport and Bettendorf Police Departments. The four officers are part of the QCMEG Hotel/Motel Interdiction (HIDE) Unit, which focuses on interdiction efforts in hotels and motels, on highways, in parcels, and on buses and air travel. The project goals are to reduce the amount of illegal narcotics available to the public and arrest those who distribute illegal narcotics throughout the community.
