Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2010, $16,630)
The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).
Big Horn County will apply JAG funds towards the procurement and installation of Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) software designed by BullBerry Systems. An AVL system will provide up-to-date location information for Big Horn County emergency vehicles and sheriff patrol vehicles. The County will purchase and install ten BullBerry Insight Mobile Software packages for patrol vehicles and emergency response vehicles, purchase and install a BullBerry AVL Communicator in the county dispatch office, and provide systems training for the public safety dispatchers, sworn officers and emergency responders.
Use of this system will reduce the response times of Big Horn County patrol vehicles and emergency response vehicles when responding to emergency situations; increase the safety of sworn officers, emergency response teams and citizens by responding to emergency situations in a more timely and effective manner; and decrease fuel consumption and mileage associated with patrol vehicles and emergency response vehicles.
