Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2010, $37,941)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).

The disparate jurisdictions, consisting the city of Hutchinson and Reno County, will share the JAG award. In a disparate situation, the units of local government must apply for an award with a single, joint application. JAG funds will be used for activities and projects that will provide meaningful and measurable outcomes consistent with the goals of the JAG Program. The city of Hutchinson, serving as the fiscal agent for the grant award, will use their share of grant funds to purchase double gun cases, single point M16 slings, light and rail systems for existing M16s, and ballistic shields for the city police department. The city will also use grant funds to purchase breath testers for the school resource officers and high definition cameras for the police investigation division. Reno County, through the sheriff's office, will use their share of the grant funds to purchase light bars, sirens, and professional traction tools and Go Treds, which will be used to assist officers maneuver in rural areas.
