Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2011, $500,000)

The Fox Valley Technical College (FVTC) will increase awareness of the critical role probation officers have within tribal justice systems. This project is designed to enhance tribal justice systems and support unmet need for training of probation officers in Indian country. The project will enhance the tribal probation officer's level of training, professionalism, and capacity to support the quality of life for tribal community members. FVTC will deliver Tribal Probation Academies trainings and increase awareness of the probation officers' role by providing four workshops at national conferences. There will be a focus group to look at the training needs for probation officer supervisors and two site visits to support probation department development. To coordinate these activities, FVTC will work with the American Probation and Parole Association, who will provide faculty support for the academies and will provide assistance with marketing and education of field representatives.
