The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).
The Burlington Police Department's goal is to have technology upgrades in three areas. The Department will replace an aging video/audio recording system in one of its interview/interrogation rooms; purchase ARAS Reconstruction and Crime Scene equipment and software, to greatly enhance the ability to investigate, document, and diagram crime scenes and motor vehicle crashes; and purchase in-car printers and mounts for vehicles in the Operations Division and Traffic Division. This will enable officers to utilize the E-Crash and E-Citation function to better serve the public. The Alamance County Sheriff Department's primary goal is to enhance the security of its Detention Facility by purchasing a key management system. Their secondary goal is to convert fourteen radio headsets for the Department's Special Response Team to the new 800 MHz (VIPER) system.
