Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2011, $40,989)
The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).
The grantee will use grant funds to purchase a new vehicle that would greatly enhance Correction Officers capability to transport inmates in large numbers more efficiently, providing a much greater level of safety and security for Deputies and inmates. A segregated inmate transport area within the vehicle, enables staff to segregate male and female inmates as well as non-violent inmates from violent ones. This would not only provide a safer more secure environment for both Deputies and inmates, it would allow the simultaneous transport of multiple classifications of inmates at one time. Installation of video and audio monitoring equipment in the vehicle, would allow Deputies to monitor the activities of the inmates while in transit, and enable Deputies to take action or intervene in the event of a crisis, in a much more timely manner. Cameras and audio equipment would provide evidence in the event of a criminal offense committed in transit and in the event allegations of misconduct are made against inmates or Deputies.
