Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2011, $529,000)

The Center for Court Innovation (the Center) will continue their efforts under the Tribal Justice Exchange program and launch a peacemaking pilot program in a state court system. The goals of this project are to enhance the ability of tribal communities to plan and implement effective justice system enhancements in a manner that is consistent with local priorities, resources, and values and enhance tribal courts' access to timely information about new ideas and innovations being developed in both tribal and state justice systems around the country. The Center will ensure that tribal communities have access to training and ongoing technical assistance about community-based, problem-solving justice; encourage formal collaborations between tribal justice systems and state and local court systems; and identify and disseminate best practices developed in Indian Country that could help strengthen public safety initiatives elsewhere in the United States.
