Pretrial Assessment of Misdemeanor Defendants: Development and Implementation of an Evidence-Based Tool

The Fund for the City of New York, Center for Court Innovation will develop, implement, and test a pretrial assessment tool expressly for misdemeanor defendants. The project will consist of two sequential phases: (1) creating, piloting, and analyzing a comprehensive assessment instrument that draws on existing validated assessment tools, new research on evidence-based assessments, and input from an expert panel to identify key risk/need domains and questions specific to the misdemeanor offenders; and (2) based on the results of the Phase One study, designing and validating a new, brief assessment tool expressly tailored to the misdemeanor population.
