Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2012, $2,265,856)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).

The Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration, Office of Intergovernmental Services will provide support for multi-jurisdictional task force programs, law enforcement programs, prosecution and court programs, and prevention and education programs. The State will provide assistance to state and local law enforcement units to improve their effectiveness in controlling and deterring crime, including multi-jurisdictional drug task forces. Through coordinated efforts the multi-jurisdictional task forces which receive funding through this program will work with other state and federal agencies to dismantle and arrest members of interstate organized crime. The goal of this program is to provide assistance in arrest and prosecution by making the criminal files, laboratory evidence, and legal research available to the prosecutor before the trial begins. The Department of Finance and Administration, Office of Intergovernmental Services will administer JAG funding to units of local law enforcement through mini-grants to support projects to reduce crime and improve public safety.
