The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).

The Mississippi Division of Public Safety will increase the capacity of local agencies to address illegal drugs and violent crimes and to reduce crime in Mississippi, as well as implement innovative evidenced-based programs to engage communities and system stakeholders in curtailing criminal activities in target communities. Mississippi's strategic plan is a comprehensive approach that addresses the crime problems facing the state's criminal justice system, strengthening identified weaknesses in the system, and increasing coordination between state and local agencies. Grant funds will be used to fund projects which support the following priorities: multi-jurisdictional drug task force programs; law enforcement enhancement programs; strategic planning; and highway interdiction programs that investigate, arrest, and prosecute illegal drug activity throughout the State. The Division of Public Safety Planning will distribute funds awarded to units of state and local government.
