Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2012, $185,375)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).

The City of Winston-Salem and Forsyth have been identified as disparate and have agreed to split the Fiscal Year 2012 JAG funds allocated to them. The City of Winston-Salem will use its portion to purchase the following equipment for its police department: an explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) bomb suit for its bomb squad; a robotic mobile imaging device to obtain critical visual intelligence in areas not cleared for safe entry; explosive storage bunkers to safely store explosives; self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) air packs to protect against exposure to airborne contaminates; a portable digital x-ray system to x-ray suspected or actual explosive devices; an x-ray grid overlay system to assist in bomb disarming; and traffic analyzers to record vehicle speed data. Forsyth County will use its portion to purchase a body-mounted digital video camera system for its sheriffs department. The new camera system will supplement the current in-car camera system, providing additional video recording beyond the field of vision of the current in-car cameras. NCA/NCF
