Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2013, $600,000)

The BJA Law Enforcement (LE) National Training and Technical Assistance (TTA) Program is funded under the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program. The JAG Program (42 U.S.C. § 3751(a)) is the primary provider of federal criminal justice funding to state and local jurisdictions, and JAG funds support all components of the criminal justice system. This FY 2013 LE National award focuses on provision of TTA to state and local law enforcement and crime prevention efforts targeting emerging crime. TTA will be developed and delivered in one of three categories to improve the functioning of the criminal justice system: (1) Educating the 21st Century Law Enforcement Officer; (2) Increasing Analytical Capacity: Training for the Law Enforcement Executive; and (3) Delivery of Evidenced-Based Violence Reduction Strategies.

The Institute for Intergovernmental Research will plan, develop, and deliver intensive TTA opportunities for teams of three to five criminal justice practitioners and policymakers from some of the nation's most violent communities. They will work with BJA/OJP staff, researchers, and technical assistance providers as well as other participants to learn about the best evidence-based approaches to addressing violent crime in their community. This unique TTA opportunity will include tracks for participants based on the stages of the criminal justice process and appropriate violence reduction strategies for each phase including, but not limited to: prevention, interdiction, pretrial, prosecution and adjudication, parole/probation, and reentry. In addition, peer-to-peer support and follow-up TTA support will be offered to the summit participants throughout the following year.
