Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2013, $499,768)

The Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) Program is designed to create safer neighborhoods through a sustained reduction in crime associated with gang and gun violence. The program's effectiveness is based on the cooperation of local, state, and federal agencies engaged in a unified approach led by the U.S. Attorney (USA) in each district. The USA is responsible for establishing a collaborative PSN task force of federal, state, and local law enforcement and other community members to implement gang and gun crime enforcement, intervention and prevention initiatives within the district. Through the PSN task force, the USA will implement the five design features of PSN partnerships, strategic planning, training, outreach, and accountability to address specific gun and gang crime problems in that district.

The Ohio Office of Criminal Justice Services (OCJS), serving as the fiscal agent for the Northern District of Ohio, will reduce gang and gun violence in Northern Ohio. The United States Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Ohio will coordinate with the Northern Ohio Violent Crime Consortium (NOVCC). The goal of the NOVCC is to enhance the capacity of local, state, and federal law enforcement to prevent and respond to violent crime utilizing effective evidence based practices. The proposed PSN project will provide support for agencies to conduct gang and gun interventions that are guided by analysis of best practices derived from the George Mason Center for Evidence Based Crime Policy, as well as locally validated best practices for the prevention of gang and gun violence.
