Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2014, $499,958)

The National Initiatives Reaching Criminal Justice Policymakers Program is designed to provide objective, fact-based information, resources, and training and technical assistance (TTA) on timely and pressing criminal justice issues of potential concern to the nation's criminal justice policymakers. The program's intent is to support pathways for evidence-based best practices to reach policymakers in various roles. This competitive grant announcement will support four categories focusing on providing specialized information, training and technical assistance to: State Administering Agencies (SAAs); state and local government policymakers (such as governors, state legislators, county officials, and mayors); parole authorities; and, state and local departments of corrections.

The recipient will use grant funds for The National Parole Resource Center (NPRC), which will provide training and technical assistance (TTA) to parole boards and releasing authorities nationwide. The focus of these efforts will be on synthesizing and translating evidence-based information on risk reduction and helping parole boards to apply and operationalize this information into their daily practice. TTA will be centered around the "Ten Practice Targets for Paroling Authorities," a set of practice standards for exceptional parole practice that have been widely accepted by the field and supported by BJA.
