Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2014, $175,000)

The National Initiatives Reaching Criminal Justice Policymakers Program is designed to provide objective, fact-based information, resources, and training and technical assistance (TTA) on timely and pressing criminal justice issues of potential concern to the nation's criminal justice policymakers. The program's intent is to support pathways for evidence-based best practices to reach policymakers in various roles. This competitive grant announcement will support four categories focusing on providing specialized information, training and technical assistance to: State Administering Agencies (SAAs); state and local government policymakers (such as governors, state legislators, county officials, and mayors); parole authorities; and, state and local departments of corrections.

The Vera Institute of Justice (Vera) will use funds to support the provision and expansion of postsecondary educational opportunities in prison and post-release. Vera will provide expert information and technical assistance to state departments of corrections and to state and local policymakers. CA/NCF
