Data Driven Multi-disciplinary Approaches to Reducing Prescription Drug Abuse

The Harold Rogers Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) provides funding to allow state’s discretion to plan, implement, or enhance a PDMP to accommodate local decision-making based on state laws and preferences, while encouraging the replication of promising practices. In FY 2015, the PDMP Program provides resources in four purpose areas to support the following: 1) statewide implementation and enhancement grants; 2) practitioner and research partnership cooperative agreements; 3) data-driven multi-disciplinary approaches to reducing prescription abuse cooperative agreements; and 4) tribal prescription drug monitoring data sharing grants.

Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment will use the award funds to focus on the program’s main goals. Cooperative agreement recipients will form multi-disciplinary action groups consisting of local, state, and federal criminal justice professionals in addition to state and local health authorities, and treatment providers. Action group members may include (but are not limited to): district attorney’s office, state or local health department, state medical and pharmacy boards, police and sheriff departments, probation and parole, local drug treatment providers, and community organizations. In addition the award recipients will determine best practices for sharing data, establishing effective policy and regulatory schemes, supporting investigations, treatment intervention, and prevention efforts for at-risk individuals and communities.
