Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2016, $164,542)

To achieve the objectives for this Coverdell investment, the Denver Crime Laboratory will make one key investment that will have long-term, quantifiable improvements over current operations in the quality and timeliness of forensic science services. The crime laboratory will purchase a 3D scanner to replace the current crime scene processing system of manual measurements and videos. All crime scene unit investigators will undergo training on the scanner's usage. Following purchasing, the crime laboratory will validate it to confirm that it performs as expected. Crime laboratory personnel will determine its optimal scan settings based on lighting, weather, and other variables, repeatability, reproducibility, and range of area to be scanned. Based on this information, DPD will determine best practices in accordance with departmental needs. Based on these results, the Crime Scene Unit Standard Operating Procedures will be updated to include usage criteria for optimal usage.
