Backlog Reduction of the York County Sheriff's Office Forensic Biology Laboratory by Increasing Equipment and Updating and Purchasing New Software Programs

The York County Sheriff’s Office (YCSO) requests funding under the DNA Capacity and Backlog Reduction Grant to improve the quality and timeliness of forensic science services provided by the Forensic Biology Laboratory as well as significantly decrease the backlog of cases. Funding from this grant will be utilized for a DNA extraction instrument, a contract for validation of robotic scripts for new chemistries and LIMS batching, document control and upgraded DNA analysis software that will allow for a decrease in the amount of time it takes to process a case for DNA. All DNA samples generated from this grant will be uploaded to SDIS and NDIS following NDIS guidelines. It is expected that the processes added to the laboratory from this grant funding will allow the YCSO forensic biology lab to decrease the backlog to within 60 days of receipt of a case.
