The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following program areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).
The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) will utilize this Fiscal Year (FY) 2016 JAG award to continue funding support to many law enforcement and criminal justice agencies and community programs throughout CNMI. These programs focus on addressing crime through the provision of services directly to individuals and/or communities and on improving the effectiveness and efficiency of the entire criminal justice system. The CNMI will see to it that all these law enforcement and criminal justice agenciesÂ’ programs reflect results in all criminal justice system components. These programs include the Multi-jurisdictional drug and gang task forces, crime prevention programs, law enforcement programs, domestic violence programs, courts, corrections, treatment and justice information sharing initiatives. All these programs are in line with the Criminal Justice Commonwealth Council for the Improvement of the Criminal Justice System.
