Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2016, $3,700,000)

This award is made under the FY 2016 Public Safety Officers' Benefits National Firefighter Survivor Support solicitation to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF). The purpose of this award is to enhance peer and counseling support to survivors nationwide, and assist in expediting the submission and review of PSOB death claims. NFFF was created by Congress in 1992 to offer support to every fire department, volunteer fire department, and many Emergency Medical Service (EMS) agencies when a line of duty death occurs. NFFF will use the grant funds to support the following: peer-to-peer counseling; survivor retreats; a fire service survivors' conference; training to prepare fire departments for line-of-duty deaths; training and assistance for filing of Public Safety Officers' Benefits; kids bereavement camps; online resources and publications for survivors; the Annual National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend; a database of information on fallen firefighters and survivors; increase awareness of PSOB and importance of updating survivor information among line-level firefighters; and the development of a multi-year needs assessment of grant activities and their impact on survivor needs.
