Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2017, $94,741)
Kentucky State Police: The Kentucky State Police Forensic Laboratories and Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) Unit request federal funds to improve both the quality of services provided to the Commonwealth of Kentucky, as well as decrease backlogs.
The Kentucky State Police will use grant funds for costs associated with attending forensic conferences and training events to realize better testing quality and the implementation of best practices for improving turnaround times in case completion.
In addition to attending forensic conference and training events, the Kentucky State Police proposes to use grant fund for costs associated with equipment purchases to improve the technology in identifying synthetic and designer drugs in the field and for an Integrated Digital Camera for Firearm Comparison Microscope.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner proposes to improve both the efficiency and efficacy of its postmortem examinations with the purchase of new cameras that take high quality images during postmortem examinations and neuropathology dissections. These new cameras will aid the forensic pathologist in documenting injuries, disease and other significant findings to be used in Kentucky courts of law.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner also proposes to improve its efficiency and safety of the decedent as well as staff with the purchase of new gurneys as the current gurneys are beyond repair and dangerous to use during postmortem examinations.
