Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2017, $1,299,280)

The FY 2017 Law Enforcement National Initiatives: Improving Responses to Criminal Justice Issues Competitive Grant Announcement focuses on national initiatives to improve the functioning of the criminal justice system, specifically by (1) providing training to selected law enforcement to develop effective communication strategies; (2) continuing the National Center for Campus Public Safety, which was established in FY 2013; and (3) providing training and technical assistance (TTA) to law enforcement on performance management to improve accountability with communities through the CompStat process. This BJA-administered program helps improve criminal justice systems by supporting funding for national program efforts such as TTA to address the needs of state and local justice systems and communities.
The Police Foundation and Vera will use the BJA funds to form the CompStat Training and Technical Assistance (TTA) Team to provide tailored, site-specific assistance to local law enforcement and their stakeholders (e.g., local elected officials and public safety and criminal justice agencies).
