Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2018, $271,960)
Forensic laboratories are constantly faced with the challenge of technological advances and the inability to acquire equipment with capabilities that keep up with the current needs due to limited resources. Additionally, the inherent high turn-over rates in governmental agencies, particularly in the areas of specialized education like the forensic sciences, creates a great need for continuing education. Discipline-specific education is essential to training new scientists, as well as in retaining certification requirements for existing personnel.
The three accredited forensic science laboratories in Kansas will share these funds to:
Provide opportunities for scientists and other laboratory staff to attend conferences and specialized training to increase job knowledge, remain current with new technology mandates, and meet minimal continuing education and certification requirements.
Purchase new chip-off forensics training, equipment, and GrayKey software for Digital & Multimedia Evidence section scientists.
Purchase a Liquid Chromatograph/Single Quad Mass Spectrometer [LC/MS] (opioid-related).
The overall outcomes to be achieved are:
More knowledgeable forensic scientists.
Exposure to experts in their respective fields.
Exposure to new technology, integrated into current procedures.
Increased efficiency through improved quality and timeliness of forensic services.
