Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2018, $55,714)

The Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD) Forensic Services Bureau (FSB) requests funding under the FY 2018 Paul Coverdell Forensic Science Improvement Grants Program to fund a Forensic Laboratory Specialist position. The FSB continues to seek ways to improve the efficiency of its operation in order to provide timely forensic services and meet the needs of the criminal justice system.

The Forensic Laboratory Specialist position will be utilized to improve the quality and timeliness of forensic science services. In 2017, the FSB received over 3,800 firearm and toolmark submissions, including over 2,700 firearms for test firing and entry into the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN). The Forensic Laboratory Specialist will be responsible for the day-to-day tasks related to screening, processing, and entering firearms and firearms related evidence in NIBIN.

This funding will increase the efficiency and productivity of the FSB by enabling the laboratory to process firearms casework in a timely manner. Funding one Forensic Laboratory Specialist will enable the FSB to make approximately 420 entries per month in NIBIN. Ultimately, this federal funding will enable the FSB to enhance its support of violent crime investigations.
