AFIS Workstation Upgrade Project

The efficiency and functionality of the Fingerprint Section can be improved by upgrading specific equipment. The current ALS is a handheld, battery-operated flashlight that is not ideal for all types of evidence photography.

Replacing the flashlight with a higher intensity, AC-powered ALS with an adjustable stand will improve the quality of evidence photographs, while also decreasing the number of photographs and time spent on each item. An ALS meeting these requirements, but without unnecessary features that make the unit more expensive, is available from Foster+Freeman.

With regard to the AFIS system, three latent print examiners have workstations used for digital imaging, conducting latent print searches, and additional functions. This setup enables latent print casework to be completed in a timely manner. While the current AFIS software is one of the most recent available from the vendor, Gemalto Cogent, the workstations are running Windows XP, an outdated operating system no longer supported by Microsoft. If a workstation were to become unavailable, it could create a significant increase in turnaround time for latent print casework. Upgrading the workstations to a supported operating system will improve the reliability of the system and prevent detrimental downtime. Upgraded flatbed scanners and a shared printer will complete the workstations. Purchasing the hardware separately and having Gemalto Cogent reinstall the AFIS software will keep the upgrade cost at a minimum, while retaining the current workflow so potential suspects are reported to investigators as quickly as possible. Replacing the outdated ALS and AFIS workstations will therefore increase the efficiency and reliability of latent print casework at MVRCL.
