Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2018, $73,767)

Coverdell Program funding will greatly improve the ability of the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation to recover high quality ridge detail by purchasing Vacuum Metal Deposition (VMD) equipment and consumable packs.
VMD has the ability to recover high quality ridge detail from plastic, glass, fabrics, firearms and more. It is expected this process would far exceed the success rate of their current techniques on smaller handgun casings. VMD has been used successfully in developing prints on evidence over 20 years old. It has also been successful with samples submerged in water or buried underground, thus making this an ideal technology for cold cases especially when paired with the FBI’s Next Generation Identification. Also, the time needed for processing and photographing ridge detail is usually much shorter than other methods. When in place, this equipment will be available for all state law enforcement agencies.
