Improving the Timeliness of Forensic Science Services in the Firearms Section

The laboratory intends to utilize funding from the Paul Coverdell Forensic Science Improvement Grant to contract with an accredited private Forensic Laboratory to provide a team of firearms examiners to assist with firearms casework backlog reduction.

At the current rate of submissions received and staffing levels, it is impossible to significantly reduce the backlog without assistance. The assistance of contracted Firearms Examiners will facilitate the reduction of the current backlog. This will allow the current Firearms examiner and the Firearms Examiner in training to maintain current submissions with the assistance of the IBIS Technicians.
