Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2018, $206,860)

The Tulsa Police Department Forensic Laboratory (TPDFL) is responsible for analyzing evidential material associated with criminal investigations for the Tulsa Police Department within the City of Tulsa.

The TPDFL has a fully operational existing forensic DNA casework section that undergoes external quality assurance audits in accordance with the FBI’s Quality Assurance Standards at least once every two years and is accredited under the ASCLD/LAB-International Testing Program.

The Federal funding from this award will be used for the following goals:

1. Increasing capacity by retaining a forensic scientist and acquiring a real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) quantification instrument, automated DNA purification instrument, PCR System for amplification, two dry-bath incubators for extraction and a pipette for serology.

2. Establishing a contract with a vendor to provide an external DNA audit, as required by the Quality Assurance Standards for Forensic DNA Testing Laboratories established by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

3. Providing travel for existing forensic scientists in the Biology Section to meet their continuing education requirements.
