Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2018, $721,888)

The Louisiana State Police Crime Laboratory (LSPCL) has already implemented a DNA collection process for arrestees and convicted offenders that uses the biometric identification methodology embedded in the statewide booking system, Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS). The LSPCL proposes to validate RapidDNA analysis for samples collected from arrestees at a booking station. LSPCL estimates 4,000 arrestee samples will be analyzed at booking stations across the state through this large-scale pilot project so the CODIS hit rate, impact of expedited CODIS hit notifications, and staffing requirements necessary for full-scale implementation can be assessed.
