Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2018, $182,395)

The Midwest Regional Forensic Laboratory (MRFL) has identified an area of improvement in their laboratory: the screening of sexual assault kits and proposes the implementation of a Y-screening procedure to increase efficiency and less false-positive results. The MRFL requests funds for an outside contractor to perform the internal validation and assist with the implementation of the Y-screening procedure as well as complete an internal validation of an updated quantitation system to have an optimized system for the new screening process. By outsourcing the internal validation, the Biology Section scientists will be able to remain dedicated to casework there by reducing the number of untested DNA cases in the current backlog. Once the validation and implementation are complete, the Biology Section will be able to process sexual assault kits more efficiently and accurately select the most appropriate samples for DNA testing.
