Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2019, $572,211)

The Michigan State Police (MSP) will use the FY29 Paul Coverdell Forensic Science Improvement Grants program funding to improve the quality and timeliness of service delivery in the MSP Forensic Science Division (FSD) and the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO). The funding will be used to support two positions in the MSP’s Firearms and Controlled Substances units to improve throughout and turnaround time. The MSP will also use funding to upgrade reference libraries and data processing software which will allow the controlled substances unit to better handle the variety of novel drugs and complex mixtures being submitted into the lab. The OCSO will use funding to support one position in the Firearms unit and one position in the Toxicology unit to assist in improving the timeliness of service delivery and to expand the scope of service to include blood alcohol testing.
