Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2019, $272,275)

Delaware Division of Forensic Science (DFS) is charged with forensic science services statewide. The goal of the FY19 Paul Coverdell Grant program project is to equip DFS with the necessary items to operate efficiency and therefore improve case processing and produce more accurate scientific results. The DFS will use grant funds to purchase two safety fume hoods for the Forensic Toxicology Unit (FTU) so that expanded fentanyl/opiate testing needs can be met; validate the FT-IR in the Forensic Chemistry Unit (FCU) so that complex opiate compounds can be identified; and obtain training for the forensic chemists that conduct the opiate testing as well as training for the Medical Examiner Unit staff to maintain competency and licensure. These requests will increase the timeliness and efficiency of the DFS by expanding their ability to analyze the increased number of opiate and fentanyl analog cases through validated instrumentation, purchasing upgraded equipment to meet accreditation requirements and safely allow analysist to conduct opiate and fentanyl casework and training the DFS staff to improve opiate response.
