Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2019, $250,000)

The Richland County Sheriff’s Department (RCSD) Forensic Sciences Laboratory is requesting funding from the National Institute of Justice for the implementation of a forensic laboratory information management system (LIMS). The RCSD Laboratory conducts forensic examinations for Richland County, as well as surrounding jurisdictions if cases are determined to be of mutual interest, and on a fee-for-service basis both within the state of South Carolina and beyond. A clear need exists for a comprehensive LIMS system to efficiently manage increasing casework and accreditation demands and to improve the quality and timeliness of forensic science services. The selected LIMS will be a complete information management solution designed to serve as a comprehensive tool for conducting laboratory analyses. It will provide the ability to store and track all information resulting from on-scene investigations, including information directly submitted from related agencies and investigators; scene and investigation details and timelines; offenses committed and related subject information. This will have a positive direct impact on laboratory efficiency, thereby decreasing case backlogs and turnaround times. CA/NCF
